Tankless water heater descaled and condensate neutralizer replaced — Newport Beach
Routine maintenance on a tankless water heater in Newport Beach, plus a condensate neutralizer swap, May 2026.
What the homeowner was dealing with
The tankless water heater was due for maintenance, and its condensate neutralizer needed replacing with a unit the homeowner had bought.
What we did in this Newport Beach home
- Isolated the heater. Shut off and isolated the unit so descaling solution could be circulated through it.
- Descaled and flushed. Circulated professional-grade descaling solution through the heat exchanger to dissolve mineral buildup, then flushed the system clean and returned it to service.
- Replaced the condensate neutralizer. Removed the old neutralizer and installed the new one, cutting and reworking the PVC condensate drain line to fit.
- Added unions. Installed a union, and left a spare, so the next neutralizer swap is quick.
- Tested. Confirmed the condensate drains properly and the heater runs normally.
Why tankless heaters need descaling
Hard water leaves mineral scale inside a tankless heater’s heat exchanger. Scale makes the unit work harder, heat less evenly and wear out sooner. A descale and flush restores efficiency. The condensate neutralizer treats the acidic water a high-efficiency unit produces, so replacing it on schedule protects the drain it empties into.

- Location: Newport Beach, CA
- Owner tip: most tankless heaters in Orange County’s hard water benefit from a descale about once a year; check your manufacturer’s schedule
Questions about this job
It dissolves the mineral buildup inside the heat exchanger and flushes it out, which restores heating efficiency and helps the unit last longer.
A small cartridge that treats the acidic condensate a high-efficiency tankless heater produces before it goes down the drain. It needs replacing periodically.
Unions let the neutralizer be disconnected and swapped without cutting the PVC line again, which makes future maintenance faster.
