Laundry room water loss traced to the washer, not the pipes — Ladera Ranch
A sudden water overflow in a Ladera Ranch laundry room, investigated step by step to find the real cause, July 2026.
What the homeowner was dealing with
Water overflowed from the laundry area while the washing machine was running. The homeowner needed to know whether a pipe in the wall or under the floor had failed.
What we did in this Ladera Ranch home
- Laundry drain tested. Ran warm water through the wall drain for about 20 minutes. The area stayed dry and the cast iron drain was intact and flowing normally.
- Nearby bathroom tested. Ran the bathtub and then the shower behind the laundry wall for about 20 minutes each. No leaks, drainage problems or water intrusion.
- Acoustic leak detection. Checked the pressurized water lines with acoustic equipment. No active pressurized leak.
- Washer tested. The stackable top-loader was full of water and would not drain. On a test cycle it kept filling and never pumped out, so we stopped it before it overflowed again.
- Cause identified. A soft blockage inside the washer’s drain pump assembly kept it from discharging water, which caused the overflow.
Why the order of testing matters
A water loss next to a wall makes everyone think of a broken pipe. Testing the drain, the neighboring fixtures and the pressurized lines first ruled the house plumbing out with evidence, so nobody opened a wall or floor for nothing. The written findings also give the homeowner a clear cause of loss to share with an insurer.

- Owner tip: if a washer ever fills but won’t drain, stop the cycle and turn off its water supply before it overflows
Questions about this job
An internal soft blockage in the washing machine's drain pump assembly. The washer could not discharge water, so it overfilled and overflowed.
No. The laundry drain, the bathtub and shower behind the laundry wall, and the pressurized water lines were all tested, and none showed a leak at the time of inspection.
Service the washing machine's drain pump assembly to clear the blockage, then run the washer again to confirm it drains properly.
