Kitchen island PEX and 18 shutoff valves — Dana Point

A completed job in a Dana Point home, October 2026: the kitchen island plumbing, every accessible shutoff valve in the house, the fixture supply lines and the water heater, handled in one visit.

The job

What we did in this Dana Point home

  1. Kitchen island repiped in PEX. Removed the old copper at the island and ran new PEX with new angle stops, giving the dishwasher, the sink’s hot and cold lines, and the refrigerator ice maker each a dedicated, reachable shutoff.
  2. 18 shutoff valves rebuilt. Replaced the internal parts of 18 angle stops and shutoff valves throughout the house so they close fully again, then tested each one.
  3. Supply lines replaced. Swapped the accessible faucet and toilet supply lines, the braided hoses that commonly fail with age, and checked every connection for leaks.
  4. Homeowner’s sink and faucet installed. Connected the sink and faucet the homeowner supplied and tested them.
  5. 75-gallon water heater flushed. Drained sediment and mineral buildup from the tank.
Why it matters

A shutoff that works when you need it

When a supply line bursts, the valve under the sink or behind the toilet is what stops the water. In many homes those valves have not been turned in years and seize with mineral buildup, so they fail at exactly the wrong moment. Rebuilding them, and giving each kitchen appliance its own shutoff, means a future leak can be stopped in seconds at the fixture instead of at the main.

  • Completed: October 2026
  • Location: Dana Point, CA
  • Owner tip: gently turn each shutoff off and on once a year, and never force a stuck one
What owners ask

Questions about this job

In one visit in October 2026, Straight Flush replaced the copper piping at the kitchen island with PEX and new angle stops, rebuilt the internal parts of 18 shutoff valves throughout the house, replaced the accessible faucet and toilet supply lines, installed the homeowner's own sink and faucet, and flushed the 75-gallon water heater.

The new PEX layout gave each fixture and appliance its own accessible shutoff: the dishwasher, the sink's hot and cold supplies, and the refrigerator ice maker. If one of them leaks later, it can be turned off without shutting off water to the whole house.

About once a year. Turn each accessible angle stop and shutoff valve off and back on gently to keep mineral buildup from seizing it. Do not force a valve that is stuck or very stiff, because that can break it or start a leak; call a plumber instead.
